Interdisciplinary database of scholarly journals and popular magazines with many articles in full text.

America: History and Life. 1964-
Bibliographic database covering scholarly historical literature in the United States and Canada from prehistoric times to the present. Articles are abstracted from more than 2,100 journals. Of these, around 900 are published in the United States and Canada, including journals of state and local historical societies, the social sciences, and humanities, and leading journals in related fields of knowledge. Editors review the foreign periodicals to include all articles on American history and life.

Subject Index to one of the world's most important newspapers. Provides brief synopses and references to dates, pages, and columns of articles in the New York Times (1857-)(Microfilm 91). Essential for historical access is the Personal Name Index to The New York Times (1851-1989) (Ref. AI 21 N45 f3). See also the Index to The Times (1938) (Ref. AI 21 T46), providing comparable coverage of the London Times; retrospective indexing from 1791 to 1941 for this London newspaper is provided by Palmer's Index to The Times(Ref. AI 21 T5 1965-1966).

Pooles Index to Periodical Literature 1882-1908 [repr., 1963] (Ref AI 3 P7)
Classic subject Index to 500 popular and scholarly 19th century Anglo-American journals, covering the years 1802-1906. The modern Cumulative Author Index (Ref. AI 3 P72 1971) greatly facilitates access. See also the Nineteenth Century Reader's Guide: 1890-1899. (Ref. AI 3 R4960, forerunner of the familiar Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, 1900- (Ref. General guide to over 2000 significant documents of the world from ancient times to the present. Contains a bibliography and index.

Macmillan Concise Dictionary of World History. 1983. (Ref. D 9 W47)
Over 10,000 entries on persons, places, terms, events, and movements from all periods. The Facts on File Dictionary of European History, 1485-1789 (Ref. D 231 W54 1980), provides more traditional treatment, with entries on important political personalities and topics.

Encyclopedias

The New Larned History for Ready Reference Reading and Research. 12 Vols. 1922-1924. (Ref. D 9 L32)
Old encyclopedic dictionary of universal history, unusual in that each entry consists, not of an original article, but of one or more quoted articles or extracts from recognized authorities of the time. Interspersed with the extracts are brief biographical sketches and definitions.

Larousse Encyclopedia of Modern History. 1981. (Ref. D 209 H5153)
Chronologically arranged sections provide lucid accounts of events, people, and movements in European history from 1500 to 1980. Some coverage of the non-European world is provided, usually in the context of confrontation with western civilization. Fabulous illustrations and color plates-many rarely seen in such a general reference tool. See also the Harper Encyclopedia of the Modern World ... from 1760 to the Present (Ref. D 205 H35 1970).

Quick source for facts, figures, and events of each year. Feature articles provide useful background information. The British counterpart is Whitaker's Almanak (Ref. AY 754 W5).

Facts on File Yearbook. Annual. 1941- (Ref. D 410 F3)
Classified news digest, arranged under headings such as "World Affairs," "Foreign Affairs," "Finance," "Sports," "Obituaries," etc.

Annual Register. Annual. 1760-1991. (D 2 A7) (Earlier volumes in Special Collections)
Summarizes world events and developments. See feature chapters on religion, science, law, art, etc. Also useful is the Yearbook of The United Nations (Ref. JX 1977 A 37 Y4 1946-).

Handbooks

Historical Journals: a Handbook for Writers and Reviewers. 1993 (Ref. Z 6205 S73)
Excellent guide for contributing articles to scholarly journals. Includes introductory essays on writing and submitting articles and on book reviewing, followed by an alphabetical directory of nearly 700 journals in history and allied fields. Each entry gives current editor and address, subject emphasis, readership, and policies on manuscript submission and book reviews.

International Handbook of Historical Studies. 1979. (D 13 I62)
Features scholarly essays assessing the state of late 20th century history and historiography, examining innovations in historical method and perspective as well as continuities with traditional scholarship.

The Longman Handbook of Modern European History, 1763-1985. 1987. (Ref. D 299 C627)
Supplies chronology of major events and movements by topic, including political, social, religious, economic, and diplomatic history. Lists names and dates of important office holders. Provides statistics, brief biographies, topical biographies, and glossary of terms.

The Timetables of History: A Horizontal Linkage of People and Events. 1991. (Ref. D 11 G78) & Emerald Coast Library
Contemporaneous lives and events of history, from 5,000 B.C. on, are juxtaposed in 7 parallel colums under headings such as "History-Politics," "Religion-Philosophy-Learning," "Science-Technology," and "Daily Life." A similar but geographic format is adopted in Chronology of World History (Ref. D 11 F74 1978).

Regents of Nations 3 vols. in 4. 1984. (Ref. JF 37 T78)
Systematic chronology of states and their political representatives past and present, arranged by governors, and premiers worldwide, from the beginning of recorded time to mid-1980's. Text in English and German. See also Kings, Rulers, And Statesmen (Ref. D 107 W5 1976) and Rulers And Governments of The World, 3 Vols. (Ref. D 11 R84 1977-1978).

The Wilson Calendar of World History.(Ref. D 11 .W65 1999)
A comprehensive chronology of world events covering the period from 3500 B.C. to 1998. The source is arranged by date, geographical area, and subject categories ( Science, Religion, Culture and the Arts etc.).

This database provides citations to biographical resources. Updated monthly, the file includes books, journals, correspondence, interviews and pictorial works.

The Mcgraw-hill Encyclopedia of World Biography. 16 Vols. 1973-1989. (Ref. CT 103 M27)
A standard multi-volume work, with over 5,000 articles written by academic authorities and specialists, discussing "the lives of representative men and women whose achievements are important to our understanding of social and cultural history." Includes portraits, illustrations, annotated bibliographies, study guides and index.

New York Times Biographical Service. Monthly. 1974. (Ref. CT 120 N45)
Compilation of current biographical information excerpted from the New York Times (Microfilm 91). Useful for more recent history and background information on popular people in the news. Over 450 biographical sketches on figures ranging from Herodotus to Arnold Toynbee. Includes interpretative essays on 25 countries and 45 historiographic subjects, such as "History of Science," "Oral History," "and "Hagiography."

Standard Histories

The New Cambridge Modern History. 14 vols. 1957-1979. (Ref. D 208 N4)
The standard multi-volume history of the "Modern" Era, from 1493 to 1948. Includes atlas volume, detailed index, and supplementary Bibliography of Modern History (Ref. Z 6204 R62 1968). The Cambridge Press has also produced several noteworthy multi-volume works on specific countries or regions, including histories of Latin America (8 vols.) (Ref. F 1410 C1834 1984) and China (8 vols. to date) (Ref. DS 735 C3145 1979-).

Directory of History Departments and Organizations in the United States and Canada. Annual. 1997-98. (Ref. D 16.3 G83)
Alphabetical listing of over 700 college and university history departments and research institutes. Each entry provides departmental address, names of chair and graduate studies director, degrees offered, tuition rates and application deadlines, general areas of teaching and research specialization, names and specific expertise of faculty, enrollment statistics, and names of recent doctoral recipients and titles of their dissertations. Also provides information on historical organizations, including address, description of research collections, and profile of staff historians.
