Included in this guide are chapters on various types of philosophy reference tools: General bibliographic and research guides, dictionaries and handbooks, as well as chapters devoted to specialized branches of study. There is a chapter on core journals and another on professional associations. The 2nd edition gives a useful emphasis on electronic sources.

Research Guide to Philosophy. 1983. (Stx. & Ref. B 52 T5 1983)
The purpose of this work is to help philosophers, librarians, students of library science, and other interested persons in the use of resources in philosophy. The book is divided into three parts: Part one is a history of philosophy; part two is a survey of the field by a philosophy specialist, and the third part is an annotated listing of major reference works.

This work is an excellent research tool covering this subject area. The book consists of 38 chapters, listing both books and articles, without annotations. Most chapters represent some aspect of Marxist-Leninist thought and all begin with a critical essay.


Masterpieces of World Philosophy. 1990. (Ref. B 75 M37 1990)
This work contains essays about the masterpieces of world philosophy, covering philosophers from Ancient China and twentieth century Europe, from the United States and the Roman Empire, and from a vast array of times and places in between.

Blackwell Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Social Thought. 1993. (Ref. H 41 B53 1993)
"Much of this dictionary is devoted to particular bodies of thought that have been influential in this century: individual social sciences, philosophical schools, political doctrines, distinctive styles of art and literature. Concise Dictionary of Indian Philosophy. 1989. (Ref. B 131 G67 1989)
This is a comprehensive dictionary of most Indian philosophical terms. The terms are listed both in devanagari script and roman translation along with definitions in English. An index of important words is given at the back.


Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy. 1999. (Ref. B 41 C35 1999)
This dictionary is a superb reference work for specialists and students. It covers both Western and Eastern thought. Entries run between 500 and 1,000 words, though some may be longer.


Dictionary of Christian Ethics. 1967. (Ref. BJ 63 M3)
Included in this dictionary are articles on ethical issues and some of the great philosophical systems of ethics, especially those that have been influential in Christian ethics, such as Plato, Aristotle, and Kant. Also included are articles on Jewish, Buddhist and other non-Christian ethics, including the ethics of Marxist Communism. Also see A Dictionary of Religion and Ethics (Ref. BL 31 M3 1973).


Dictionary of Existentialism. 1999. (Ref. B 819 D455 1999)
This dictionary provides information on particular thinkers, writers, terms, and ideas developed by, or linked to, existentialism.

This dictionary, by A.R. Lacey, emphasizes Anglo-American philosophy, particularly that which concerns epistemonlogical or logical topics. It covers all periods, branches, and schools of ancient, medieval, and modern philosophy in Western thought. This one volume dictionary also serves as an encyclopedia with useful cross references covering philosophical topics, philosophers, movements, ethics, aesthetics, value theory, epistemology, logic, and the philosophy of science.


Dictionary of the History of Ideas: Studies of Pivotal Ideas. 5 volumes. 1974. (Ref. CB 5 D52)
These volumes present a varied array of selected pivotal topics in intellectual history and of methods of writing about such topics. A variety of specialist contibutors write entries of encyclopedia length.

Concise Encyclopedia of Western Philosophy and Philosophers. 1960. (Ref. B 41 U7 1960)
This volume encyclopedia covers Western philosophers and schools of thought. It is arranged alphabetically with entries ranging from 500-1,000 words to several pages. Illustrations, photographs, and copies of manuscripts are also included.

Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics. 13 volumes. 1955. (Ref. BL 31 E4)
This 13 volume comprehensive work covers all religions, ethical systems, religious beliefs, philosophical ideas, moral practices, and names of persons and places connected with any of these subjects.

Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics. 4 volumes. 1998. (Ref. BJ 63 E44 1998)
This encyclopedia consists of four volumes and includes 281 separate full-length articles on the whole range of applied ethics. The encyclopedia provides coverage of 12 subject areas within the field of applied ethics: Theories of Ethics, Ethical Concepts, Medical Ethics, Scientific Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Legal Ethics, Ethics in Education, Ethics and Politics, Business and Ecomonic Ethics, Media Ethics, Ethics and Social Services, and Social Ethics. Each article contains a bibliography to aid further investigation of a topic.

Encyclopedia of Asian Philosophy. 2001. (Ref. B 121 E53 2001)
Leaman's encyclopedia features brief to medium-length entries written by an international team of scholars about persons and concepts associated with Near Eastern and Asian philosophical traditions. The work includes a bibliography for further reading, a list of entries by theme, and name and subject indexes.

Encyclopedia of Eastern Philosophy and Religion: Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Zen. 1989. (Ref. BL 1005 L4813 1989)
This is an excellent source for information on Eastern traditions. Arrangement is alphabetical with useful cross-reference. Encyclopedia of Empiricism. 1997. (Ref. B 816 E53 1997)
This one volume encyclopedia provides information on particular figures, topics, or doctrines specifically in their relation to Empiricism. Each entry also contains a brief bibliography of primary and secondary sources.

Encyclopedia of Ethics. 3 volumes. 2001. (Ref. BJ 63 E45 2001 & Emerald Coast Library)
This encyclopedia is intended for scholars, university students, and readers with a serious interest in philosophy. While the emphasis is on ethical theory there are entries on metaethics, applied ethics, and ethical issues that are especially important to theory, as well as biographical entries on figures who have made significant contributions to theory. Useful bibliographies are included with each entry.

Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies. Volumes 2 & 5. 1970. (Ref. B 131 E5)
Volume 2 provides a detailed resume of current knowledge about the classical Indian philosophical system of Nyaya-Vaisesika in its early stages. Volume 5 is devoted to the philosophy of the Grammarians. Part I sets their school in context and summarizes its main themes. Part II, a summary of primary sources, aims at making available the substance of the main philosophical ideas contained in these works.


Encyclopedia of Morals. 1969. (Ref. BJ 63 F4 1969)
This encyclopedia provides substantial articles rather than brief notations and furnishes a multitude of cross references of ideas related to morals and ethics.


Encyclopedia of Philosophy. 8 volumes. 1967. (Ref. B 41 .E5)
This encyclopedia contains excellent articles on philosophical movements, major ideas, the philosophy of various subject fields, the history of philosophy in different countries, and biographies of major philosophers. Topics can be located by using the detailed index in Volume 8.

Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment. 1996. (Ref. B 802 W48 1996)
This encyclopedia contains general articles covering topics such as political theory, religion, science, education, aesthetics, music, and art and architecture as they relate to the Enlightenment. There are also shorter topical articles covering specific concepts, individual lives, and major publications.

This is the first choice for those needing in-depth, clearly presented information regarding philosophers, theories, concepts, issues, schools, etc. Each article includes an outline and bibliography.

This is an excellent source, providing biographical essays on more than 1,000 philosophers. Each entry includes the demographics, field of study, accomplishments, and bibliography along with an essay describing the individual's life and thought. There are useful essays on the different schools of thought in and indexes the back.

Catalogue of Renaissance Philosophers: 1350-1650. 1982. (Ref. B 775 A2 C3 1982)
This resource provides short biographical information about the Philosophers that lived between 1350 and 1650. The text is arranged by schools of thought and then chronologically within each section. A useful index and bibliography is included.

Fifty Major Philosophers: A Reference Guide. 1987. (Ref. B 72 C59 1987)
This chronologically arranged guide provides well written biographical sketches of fifty of the most important philosophers from Thaless to Sartre. Each entry contains a brief bibliography for further reading.

Great Thinkers of the Eastern World: The Major Thinkers and the Philosophical and Religious Classics of China, India, Korea, and the World of Islam. 1995. (Ref. B 5005 G74 1995)
This work provides excellent biographical information on 109 Eastern theologians and philosophers. Each essay begins with pertinent biographical information, a listing of the thinker's major works, and a summary statement of the thinker's major ideas. The body of the essay provides a brief biographical summary and a discussion of the thinker's principal works and intellectual contributions. Arrangement is chronological within geographic region.

Great Thinkers of the Western World: The Major Ideas and Classic Works of More than 100 Outstanding Western Philosophers, Physical and Social Scientists, Psychologists, Religious Writers, and Theologians. 1992. (Ref. B 72 G74 1992)
This useful source provides biographical information on 116 of the Western World's thinkers from philosophy, theology, they physical sciences, the social sciences, psychology, and religion. The articles are arranged chronologically, from Parmenides to Albert Camus. Each essay begins with pertinent biographical information, a listing of the thinker's major works, and a summary statement of the thinker's major ideas. The body of the essay provides a brief biographical summary and a discussion of the thinker's principal works and intellectual contributions.

Hobbes Dictionary. 1995. (Ref. B 1246 M37 1995)
"The key purpose of this book is to explain the key concepts in Hobbes's thought and those subsidiary concepts that are important but not well known." The book contains five parts: (1) a biography of Hobbes, (2) a chronology of Hobbes's life and works, (3) a detailed chronology of seventeenth century events in English history with correlations to Hobbes's discussion of them in Behemoth (Stacks DA400 .H6 1969), (4) a dictionary of Hobbes's concepts, and (5) an annotated bibliography.

Kant Dictionary. 1995. (Ref. B 2751 C38 1995)
Caygill provides an aid to orientation in Kant's philosophy. Included in the work is a brief biography of Kant, a listing of his major works, an A-Z dictionary of Kant's philosophical vocabulary, and a listing of further readings.

Medieval Philosophers. 1992. (Ref. B 721 M45 1992)
"In this volume important and representative thinkers from the traditions of Western medieval philosophy - Jewish, Christian and Islamic - from the period 345 to 1490 are included." Entries are arranged alphabetically and include a listing of principal works and editions, a lengthy biographical essay, and an image of original manuscripts when available.

Philosophers: Introducing Great Western Thinkers. 1999. (Stx. B 72 P44 1999)
Very brief overviews are provided here of twenty-eight notable Western philosophers.


Thinkers of the Twentieth Century. 1987. (Ref. CT 120 T45 1987)
An excellent biographical dictionary of 480 persons, including philosophers and those who were known for their philosophical impact. There is a biographical sketch, a list of critical studies, and an interpretive essay for each entry.

World Philosophy: Essay-Reviews of 225 Major Works. 5 volumes. 1982. (Ref. B 29 W68 1982)
This five volume set provides scholarly examinations of most of the key works in world philosophy. Each work is accompanied by an interpretive essay and a listing of recommended readings. The set contains useful indexes to guide users to the correct volume and page number.

History

History of Greek Philosophy. 6 volumes. 1962. (Stx. B 171 G83)
Although this six volume set is dated, it is a great source for studying Greek philosophy, from the Pre-Socratic era to Aristotle. Each volume is thoroughly documented with references and provides a strong bibliography and index.

History of Philosophy. 8 volumes. 1950. (Stx. B 72 C62 1950)
This set has become a standard history of philosophy. Volume one begins with ancient times and coverage progresses through the various schools of Western philosophy, using representative philosophers as labels for each of the volumes.

Oxford History of Western Philosophy. 1994. (Stx. B 72 O8 1994)
This title provides a brief and informative survey describing idea systems, writings, and important developments form ancient times through the twentieth century. It is organized chronologically into six major divisions: ancient philosophy, medieval philosophy, Descartes to Kant, continental philosophy from Fichte to Sartre, Mill to Wittgenstein, and political philosophy.

This multi-disciplinary database provides the full-text of articles printed in over 100 scholarly journals published by Oxford University Press. Coverage is broad in scope, including history, political science, area studies, psychology, and the social sciences.


Philosopher's Index. (CSA).
The Philosopher's Index is a bibliographic database with informative, author-written abstracts covering scholarly research in all areas of philosophy. The literature covered goes back to 1940 and includes journal articles, books, book chapters such as contributions to an anthology, and book reviews. The Philosopher's Index monitors over 550 journals from more than 40 countries and is updated quarterly.


Project MUSE. (Project MUSE)
This multi-disciplinary database provides the full-text of articles printed in nearly 200 scholarly journals published by 30 publishers. Coverage of the humanities and social sciences includes the fields of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, economics, and many others.

This is an excellent website for those studying bioethics. The site is maintained by the University of Pennsylvania and includes a listing of relevant journals and internet resources, a Virtual Library with full text articles, and essays about the bioethical topics presented on NBC's ER.

This useful website is intended for use by instructors and students. The site is divided into topical sections with links to articles, PowerPoint presentations, videos, and discussion forums within each. Examples of topics covered are: ethical relativism, utilitarianism, Aristotle and virtue ethics, animal rights, euthanasia, and military ethics.
