Information Sources in the Life Sciences. 1997. (Ref. QH 303.6 I54 1997)

A guide to selected sources of biological information including libraries, journals, newsletters, and monographs

Using the Biological Literature: A Practical Guide. 2002. (Ref. QH 303.6 D39 2002)

This comprehensive annotated guide to the biological literature is arranged by broad subject chapters and includes historical sources as well as textbooks.

Databases

Databases are the most efficient way of identifying journal articles on specific subjects. Databases index journal articles, books, conference proceedings, reports, and other materials. Databases may be searched individually or in categorized groups via Metalib. If you are searching for a journal title, look it up in the Online Catalog or the CitationLinker, SFX. If we do not own, or have access to, a journal you need, you may request it from Interlibrary Loan. If you are unsure about the quality of the journals you are using, consult the online tutorial, Scholarly Journals vs. Popular Magazines.

The most frequently used databases in marine biology are:

BIOSIS.  1970-  (DataStar).
BasicBIOSIS.  Current Five Years - (FirstSearch)

This online database is the computerized version of Biological Abstracts (1927-1995, Periodicals QH 301 B37). The online version contains over 10.5 million records from over 6,000 journals and monographs. BasicBIOSIS is a condensed version of BIOSIS, provides indexing to 375 core life science journals, and is updated weekly. Explanations of abbreviations of serial titles used in these indexes may be found in BIOSIS Serials Sources (Ref. Desk QH 301 S585). Biological & Agricultural Index. 1983-  (FirstSearch)

Indexes 226 key English language periodicals in biology and agriculture. Does not include government and research facilities' publications. It is also available in print 1916-1982 (Ref. S 1 B5). Published 1916-1964 as Agricultural Index

Biology Digest.  1989-  (Cambridge)

Over 300 journals from all areas of the life sciences are indexed in this database which is oriented toward undergraduate research. It includes comprehensive abstracts.

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.  (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts)

This database service provides access to over 70 Cambridge Scientific databases arranged under 10 broad categories. Searches may be conducted by database categories, or within selected databases. The database categories include: Agricultural Sciences, Aquatic Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Computer Technology, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Engineering Specialties, Materials Science, Market Research, and the Social Sciences. Some citations link to full-text journal articles provided by  Springer  or  Science Direct.

Sea Grant Abstracts. 1986-  (Ref. GC 1 S43)

Subtitled: "Publications From The Nation's Sea Grant Programs," each publication is described with an extensive abstract.

Zoological Record Online. 1978- (DIALOG)

This database provides worldwide coverage of the zoological literature with emphasis on the taxonomic and systematic information of zoology obtained from approximately 6,000 journals. The print version, Zoological Record. 1864-1948 (Serials Microcard S-48). 1949-1992. (Ref. QL 1 Z7).

Style Manuals

Author's Handbook of Styles for Life Science Journals. 1996. (Ref. R 119 A85 1996)

Presents the style requirements for 440 English-language life science journals

Scientific Style and Format. 1994. (Ref. T 11 S386 1994)

Subtitled "The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers," this guide to publishing style by the Council of Biology Editors is designed for application in all scientific disciplines. The Facts on File Dictionary of Marine Science. 2001. (Ref. GC 9 F28 2001)

Includes terms from various interrelated fields such as marine technology, geophysics, hydrology, and botany

Illustrated Dictionary of Immunology . 1995. (Ref. QR 180.4 C78 1995)

Defines basic terms from contemporary immunological literature. See also The Dictionary of Immunology (Ref. QR 180.4 D5 1989b).

Life Science Dictionary

A free Internet dictionary of over 8300 terms in biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, cell biology and genetics.

A collection of comprehensive articles on the study of key issues on the environment. Includes a comprehensive subject index in volume 3

Encyclopedia of Marine Sciences. 1998. (Ref. GC 9 E56 1998)

Life on Earth, 6th ed. 2 vols. 2002. (Ref. QH 541.15 B56 L54 2002)

Subtitled "An Encyclopedia of Biodiversity, Ecology, and Evolution," this source is in an A-Z format with extensive bibliographies and cross references following each article.

Handbooks

Beacham's Guide to International Endangered Species. 2 vols. 1998. (Ref. QL 82 B435 1998)

This guide to all the species that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lists as threatened or endangered includes descriptive data as well as photographs.

Coastal Plants From Cape Cod to Cape Canaveral. 2000. (Ref. QK 122 S78 2000)

Describes with text and color photography, the vascular plants that grow in the coastal habitats from Massachusetts to northern Florida

Common Coastal Birds of Florida and the Caribbean. 2001. (QL 684 F6 2001)

This handbook includes descriptive data on coastal birds of Florida and the Caribbean along with color photos.

Coral Reef Fishes. 1996. (Ref. QL 621.58 L54 1996)

Describes in text and color plates 1,700 Indo-Pacific coral reef fish species and over 350 western Atlantic species. See also Caribbean Reef Fishes (Ref. QL 621.58 R36 1996).

Corals: A Quick Reference Guide. 1999. (Ref. QL 377 C5 S67 1999)

Presents classification, food and survival information on corals of the world and includes excellent color photographs of each specimen

Field Guide to Coastal Wetland Plants of the Southeastern United States. 1993. (Ref. QK 125 T55 1993)

Describes the flora of the tidal wetlands with black and white illustrations and taxonomic, habitat, and range of distribution information. See also:  Encyclopedia of Ferns (Ref. Subtitled: "Myxiniformes to Gasterosteiformes," this volume describes 40 of the 44 known orders of fishes that inhabit the Gulf of Mexico (volume 2 will describe the remaining 4 orders). See also Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico - Texas, Louisiana, and Adjacent Waters (Ref. QL 621.56 H63 1998).

Fishes of the World. 1994. (Ref. QL 618 N4 1994)

Presents a systematic treatment of all major fish groups. Includes black and white illustrations and an extensive appended bibliography. Guild Handbook of Scientific Illustration. 2003. (Ref. Q 222 G85 2003)

An extensive handbook describing techniques used in scientific illustraion including computer graphics. Includes color and black and white illustrations.

Handbook of Microbiological Media. 1997. (Ref. QR 66.3 A85 1997)

A comprehensive guide to the formulation of thousands of media for the culture of microorganisms. See also Handbook of Media for Clinical Microbiology (Ref. QR 46 A85 1995).

Practical Handbook of Marine Science. 2001. (Ref. GC 11.2 P73 2001)

Subtitled: "A Medical and Biological Handbook," this source includes extensive color plates of venomous marine animals and their victims.

Atlases

Atlas of Endangered Species. 1999. (Ref. QH 75 A85 1999)

Provides an overview of the problems contributing to the decline of wildlife as well as a discussion of each threatened species and includes color photographs and distribution maps

A Color Atlas of Dangerous Marine Animals. 1990. (Ref. QL 100 H29 1990)

Photographs and distribution maps are used in this source to describe most known dangerous marine animals world-wide. See also: Poisonous and Venomous Marine Animals of the World (Ref. RA 1255 H35 1988).

World Atlas of Coral Reefs. 2001. (Ref. G 1046 L4 2001)

This U.N produced atlas covers the worldwide distribution of coral reefs and includes a survey of the health and status of each reef.
