Fieldwork in the Library: A Guide to Research in Anthropology and Related Area Studies. 1994. (Ref. GN 42 W47 1994)
This introduction to the literature of anthropology contains references to research materials and methods. It is comprehensive in its treatment of area studies.


Finding the Source in Sociology and Anthropology. 1987. (Ref. HM 51 B84)
This work includes a bibliography of reference sources in sociology and anthropology. A thesaurus of terms serving as a cumulative index to the reference sources is also provided.


Indians of North America: Methods and Sources for Library Research. 1983. (Ref. E 77 H12)
This guide to library research on Native Americans is divided into three parts. The first section covers library methodology and reference works, including both print and electronic sources. Part two contains an annotated bibliography, while the final part presents a list of books on individual tribes. See also the Guide to Research on North American Indians (Ref. E 77 H54).


Introduction to Library Research in Anthropology. 1998. (Ref. GN 42 W4 1998)
This source provides a characterization of the discipline and describes resources and archives available for researching anthropology. An overview of research strategy is also included, followed by a selectively annotated list of reference sources in anthropology.

This source includes abstracts to the literature in all areas of anthropology, including archaeology, ethnology, and linguistics.


Anthropological Index Online. 1970-
This online index of journals in the Museum of Mankind Library, incorporating the holdings of the former Royal Anthropological Institute, provides subject and keyword searching capabilities. In addition, subjects and locations may be browsed.


Anthropology Plus. 19th Century- (Eureka)
This database contains abstracts on anthropology and archaeology, including art history, demography, economics, psychology, and religious studies. International coverage from the 19th century to the present is provided.


Handbook of Latin American Studies. 19th Century- (Eureka)
This resource contains abstracts to books, book chapters, journal articles, and conference proceedings on Latin American studies.


Index to Bulletins 1-100 of the Bureau of American Ethnology: With Indexes to Contributions to North American Ethnology, Introductions, and Miscellaneous Publications. 1972-1993. (Ref. E51 U6 no. 178)
This index volume for Bulletins 1-100 is divided into five parts, the first of which contains a subject index. Part 2 includes an author/title index, while Part 3 consists of an index to illustrations. Parts 4 & 5 serve as indexes to miscellaneous publications.

This multidisciplinary database provides access to journal articles in anthropology and the other social sciences.


Sociological Abstracts. 1963- (Cambridge)
This database provides abstracts of articles from over 1,000 international sociology and social science journals, with a cumulative index appearing annually. To most effectively use the index, consult the Thesaurus of Sociological Index Terms (Ref. HM 1 S672) to determine the appropriate terminology. The printed version of this source, Sociological Abstracts (Ref. HM 1 S67), is available from 1953-1962.


Wiley Interscience. 1996-
This database contains full text coverage of 1,000 journals, major reference works, and online books. A selection of anthropology and archaeology journals are represented.

Collections

HRAF File. 1988.
The Human Relations Area File is a microfiche collection of primary source material concerning the behavior, social life, and customs of cultures or societies around the world. The Outline of World Cultures (Ref. GN 345.3 M87 1983) lists the cultural groups included in the file and the Outline of Cultural Materials (Ref. GN 345.3 .O95 1987) outlines the categories of subject classification used to organize the HRAF collection. UWF maintains a collection of HRAF materials which includes data on Native Americans.


MOST Clearinghouse
This research program, developed and maintained by UNESCO, provides full-text access to research in the social sciences. The clearinghouse publications primarily relate to social, economic, environmental, and technological transformations, as well as to multicultural issues.


Smithsonian Institution
This network of museums and galleries features art, history, human cultures, and science.

This comprehensive encyclopedia provides information on many aspects of human evolution.

This work presents lengthy essays on humanity, culture, and social life. References follow each entry and an index is provided.


Dictionary of Anthropology. 1986. (Ref. GN 11 D48)
This dictionary includes short definitions of anthropological terms and biographical information about anthropologists. See also the Anthropological Glossary (Ref. GN 11 P43).


Dictionary of Concepts in Cultural Anthropology. 1991. (Ref. GN 307 .W56 1991)
This work provides lengthy definitions of terminology in cultural anthropology. Entries cover broad concepts including civilization, marriage evolution, and religion. Bibliographies follow each definition. For descriptions of terms in another specialized area of anthropology, see the Dictionary of Concepts in Human Geography (Ref. GF 4 L37).


Dictionary of Languages: The Definitive Guide to More Than 400 Languages. 1998. (Ref. P 371 D35 1998)
This informative volume, outlined using alphabetical entries from Abkhaz to Zulu, presents the history, geography, and other insight into 400 of the more than 5,000 major languages and language families used worldwide in the 20th century. Maps and tables outlining numerals from 1 to 10 in each language complement the text. The work includes cross-references and an index.

This work provides lengthy descriptions of terms and ideas such as adaptation, border studies, disaster studies, ethnoarchaeology, folklore, redistribution, sociolinguistics, and other concepts in cultural anthropology. References are provided for each entry.

This work contains over 200 entries relating to terms and theories in social and cultural anthropology. Biographical information and a glossary of short definitions are provided in the appendices.

This comprehensive work identifies and discusses contemporary peoples and ethnic groups. Each entry provides information about geographical location, language, tradition, values, lifestyle, religion, politics, and history. Maps and illustrations are included. This work provides descriptive summaries of the demographic, historical, social, economic, political, and religious aspects of cultures throughout the world. The entries are arranged within the volumes geographically.


Folklore: An Encyclopedia of Beliefs, Customs, Tales, Music, and Art. 1997. 2 volumes. (Ref. GR 35 F63 1997)
This work provides lengthy essays of concepts relating to folklore, including animism, ballads, folk music, myth, and more. References are provided for each entry.


History of Physical Anthropology: An Encyclopedia. 1997. 2 volumes. (Ref. GN 50.3 H57 1997)
This work defines terms describing areas of human natural history, including the entire scope of physical anthropology, including primatology, paleoanthropology, human genetics, evolution, and human ecology.


International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences (IESBS). 2001. (Ref. H 41 I58 2001 & available online)
This highly inter-disciplinary, 26-volume encyclopedia set provides thousands of detailed articles written by 4,000 authors from over 50 countries, including 150 biographical entries of deceased scientists and scholars. The fully cross-referenced work also provides approximately 90,000 bibliographic references and concludes with comprehensive name and subject indexes. This new reference tool helps to supplement and update the information contained in MacMillan's classic, 18-volume International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (Ref. H 40 A2 I5) published in 1968.

Handbooks

Anthropology of Religion: A Handbook. 1997. (Ref. GN 470 A55 1997)
This handbook discusses various aspects of the anthropology of religion, including shamanism, religious consciousness, and rituals and traditions. Extensive bibliographies follow each chapter and a general bibliography concludes the work.


Heritage Resources Law: Protecting the Archeological and Cultural Environment. 1999. (Ref. KF 4310 .H883 1999)
This resource examines how the law has come to view archaeological and other heritage resources. Although it addresses heritage resources mainly within the context of federal law, it does discuss state law and American Indian tribal law that sometimes constitute supplementary or controlling authority.

Arranged geographically, this work serves as a directory of approximately 250 selected archives, libraries, and museums worldwide which house collections of primary, non-artifactual documentation of anthropological significance.


Directory of Folklife Resources in the U.S.
This directory of agencies, archives, education programs, and organizations about folklife also provides a bibliography of journals and books relating to folklife.


International Dictionary of Anthropologists. 1991. (Ref. GN 20 I5)
This directory of institutional and professional members of the American Anthropological Association provides biographical and other information for each entry.


Women Anthropologists: A Biographical Dictionary. 1988. (Ref. GN 20 W63)
This work provides biographies of 58 female anthropologists. Lengthy biographical essays describe the early life, education, career, and contributions to the field of anthropology by these predominantly American and British women. Extensive bibliographies accompany each entry.


Worldwide E-Mail Directory of Anthropologists
This international database includes contact information for over 1,500 institutions and 4,000 individuals involved in anthropology.
