This is a comprehensive list of primary and secondary legal materials available exclusively in print and electronic formats at the UWF Library. Unless otherwise indicated, the electronic sources provide full text coverage.

This 26-page quick reference guide briefly outlines 44 fundamental rules of style, usage, and punctuation for effective written legal communication. Clarity, brevity, simplicity, and tone are each discussed and the work concludes with a self-editing checklist.


Legal Information: How to Find It, How to Use It.  1999. (Ref. KF 240 O365)
An overview of legal research is presented in this guide. It provides introductions and explanations of printed and electronic sources of laws, regulations, and cases. This source provides descriptions of criminal justice issues ranging from broad topics such as the Constitution to specific crimes and concepts including arson, vandalism, etc. Each entry includes a definition, a description of its significance, and other relevant information about the topic. A bibliography accompanies each entry. For a comprehensive encyclopedia intended for the layperson, see Guide to American Law (Ref. KF 156 G77 1990).

This alphabetically-arranged dictionary provides brief explanations of over 5,000 terms and phrases related to international and comparative law. Like its forebears, this third edition is cross-referenced and entries contain to other legal sources as appropriate.


Ethics in the U.S. Government: An Encyclopedia of Investigations, Scandals, Reforms, and Legislation. 2001. (Ref. JK 468 E7 R556)
The entries in this fully cross-referenced encyclopedia range from a paragraph to several pages, and provide references to further reading. The book also contains an index, selected black and white images, and a timeline of important events.


Legal Systems of the World:  A Political, Social, and Cultural Encyclopedia. 2002. 4 volumes. (Ref. K 48 L44 2002)
This alphabetically-arranged, fully-indexed encyclopedia provides nearly 400 lengthy essays addressing the legal systems of countries throughout the world. Both the federal and state systems of the United States are discussed. Entries present such topics as general information, history, culture, government, structure, legal concepts, staffing, legal practice and training, the impact of the law, and notable features of the legal system. Maps and charts complement the text of the articles, while each entry concludes with references to further reading.


Magill's Legal Guide. 2000. (Ref. KF 385 M35)
This three volume set, which is alphabetically arranged, defines basic legal concepts and procedures and addresses legal issues in civil and criminal law.


Modern Dictionary for the Legal Profession. 2001. (Ref. KF 156 B49 2001)
Contains definitions of over 8,000 modern terms from a variety of professions relating to law. The majority of concepts are from the areas of business and political science, although coverage of psychology, literature and medicine is also provided.


National Survey of State Laws. 1993. (Ref. KF 386 N38 1993)
This easy to read work provides an overall view of 42 controversial legal issues across the 50 states. A straight-forward chart format allows for state-by-state comparisons on such key issues as abortion, adoption, gun control, and capital punishment. Topics are divided into 8 general categories: Business & consumer law, criminal laws, education, employment, family, general civil laws, real estate, and tax law.


Oxford Dictionary of American Legal Quotations. 1993. (Ref. KF 159 S53)
Over 3,500 legal quotations from judges, lawyers and legal commentators as well as sayings from literature, movies and songs are contained in this source. The dictionary is arranged by category and indexed by author and keyword.


Philosophy of Law, an Encyclopedia. 1999. (Ref. K 204 P49)
A two volume reference work that presents the issues that constitute the philosophy of law and points to the means for further investigation. It is alphabetically arranged and extensively indexed.


Prince's Bieber Dictionary of Legal Citations. 2001. (Ref. KF 246 P73 2001)
Intended to serve as a companion to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, this work explains in detail the citations of multiple legal authorities, including state and federal courts.


West's Encyclopedia of American Law. 1998. (Ref. KF 154 W47)
This 12 volume set, devoted to terms, concepts, events, movements, cases and persons significant to U.S. law, includes definitions, cross-references, and biographies and some landmark cases. Published as an annual update to the West's Encyclopedia of American Law, each volume covers the year's events relating to legal issues.


The Complete Will Kit. 1990. (Ref. KF 755 Z9 A45)
This workbook provides information about creating a will. It includes examples of wills and other related forms. See also Florida Will and Trust Forms Manual (Ref. KFF 144 F46). Florida Law: A Layman's Guide. 1993. (Ref. KFF 81 K4 )
A comprehensive guide to legal problems relating to property, wills, family issues, employment, and crime in Florida. Appendices providing examples of legal guidelines are located at the end of the book.


Great American Trials. 1994. (Ref. KF 220 G74)
Summaries of 200 trials that have historic and legal significance, as well as cases that received public interest, are included in this encyclopedia. The Dred Scott case, the Miranda decision, Brown vs. Board, and trials involving celebrities such as Pete Rose, Jim Baker, and Mike Tyson are examples of the types of trials contained in this source.


Independent Counsel: The Law and the Investigators. 2001. (Ref. KF 5107.5 J64)
This handbook is divided into the following chapters: Executive Misconduct; The Watergate Investigations; Precursors to Independent Counsel Legislation (1973-1978; The Struggle to Balance Discretion, Independence, and Accountability (Legislation from 1978-1994; Independent Counsel Investigations (1978-2000); and the End of the Independent Counsel Law. Charts containing information on state laws are provided in this source. Laws pertaining to business, education, family, civil rights, real estate, and taxes are covered.

This book presents, in summary form, the current constitutions of the fifty states and three U.S. territories with broad constitutional history. Preamble, division of powers within the state, and fundamental rights provisions are outlined.

U.S. Legislation

United States Statutes at Large. 1789/1873- (Ref. KF 50 U5)
Once a law has been passed by Congress and signed by the President (or passed over his veto) it is disseminated to the public. The first printed form of the legislation is published in a pamphlet called a 'Slip Law'. These 'Slip Laws' are then cumulated chronologically by session and published in volumes entitled United States Statutes at Large. Each volume of this official statutory text contains a subject and an individual index. Earlier years are on microfiche shelved with the Reference printed volumes. Sample citation: 94 Stat. 3124.

United States Code:  Containing the General and Permanent Laws of the United States. 2000. (Ref. KF 62 2000 A2)
The U.S. Code provides access to current laws by arranging them into 50 broad subject areas called titles. This work is published every six years and is updated annually with supplements. Sample citation: 1 U.S.C. Sec. 908. The United States Code Annotated (Ref. KF 62 1927 W45) presents all the current laws in title number order but it also provides annotations of the court decisions which have interpreted each section of the code. Sample citation: 42 U.S.C.A.  Sec. 158. It is supplemented by U.S. Code Congressional and Administrative News (Ref. KF 48 U5).

U.S. Judicial or Case Law

   Electronic sources provide unofficial versions of judicial opinions. The electronic sources may be used to search and locate cases but the official print versions should be used as official cites.

Illustrated Great Decisions of the Supreme Court. 2000. (Ref. KF 4549 M334)
This encyclopedia presents alphabetically-arranged entries summarizing dozens of current and historical court cases of great significance. Each entry discusses the decision, background, vote, highlights, excerpts, and impact of the case, as well as provides the citations to the case in legal sources. Appendixes provide the text of the U. S. constitution, Supreme Court justice biographies, and a succession chart of Supreme Court seats. The work also includes a table of cases arranged by topic, a bibliography, and an index.


United States Reports. 1754- . (Ref. KF 101 U5)
Decisions made by the Supreme Court are first published as 'Slip Opinions' (Ref. KF 101 U51).  These 'Slip Opinions' are then cumulated into chronologically arranged volumes entitled United States Reports. (Sample citation: 387 U.S. 467.) The Digest Of The U.S. Supreme Court Reports (Lawyers Edition), 1969-  (Ref. KF 101.1 D5), indexes and provides summaries of the Supreme Court cases.  Both federal and state cases are also summarized in the "Decennial Digest" series (Ref. KF 141....).

Lower Federal Courts
This work provides coverage of the decisions for the U.S. Courts of Appeals, the U.S. Court of Customs and Patent Appeals, the U.S. Court of Claims, and the U.S. District Courts. Contains recent enactments of the Florida legislature. These volumes are published during each session of the legislature.

Florida Executive or Administrative Law

The Florida administrative agencies create rules and regulations which interpret or enforce Florida laws. These rules and regulations are first published chronologically and subsequently published in a subject arrangement.

Florida Judicial or Case Law

 Judicial power in Florida is vested in a Supreme Court, district courts of appeal, circuit courts and county courts. Decisions from these courts are published chronologically and later published in a subject arrangement.

The official printed versions of Florida Opinions are also available in the Southern Reporter, 1887-1941. 2d Series, 1941-2003  (Ref. KF 135 S82). Sample citation: 190 So. 2d 253.  An extremely important finding aid to Florida case law is West's Florida Digest (Ref. KFF 47.1 F552) which indexes the cases by name and also provides brief summaries of cases.

Florida Court Rules

Florida Rules of Court, State. Annual. (Ref. and Reserve KFF 529 A22)
Includes the current procedural court rules essential to state and federal practice. The rules and regulations, and by-laws of the Florida Bar are also provided in this work.
